The Colorado Ballet performed "Cinderella." Ellie Caulkins Opera House was bustling with many people. I was able to truly experience the reputation of the Colorado Ballet. The performance began with Cinderella, her stepmother, and two stepsisters. The Colorado Ballet portrayed this scene comically. It was very different from the sad feeling I had when reading the fairy tale book. Whenever Cinderella's stepsisters appeared, the audience burst into laughter. The plot of the performance was not much different from the fairy tale "Cinderella." The only difference was that the two stepsisters were portrayed in a very comical way.   (Denver = Wongeol Jeong) New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players met Colorado Symphony Chrous. On the 21st, the opera 'H.M.S Pinafore', composed in 1878, was performed at the Boettcher Concert Hall located in the Denver performing arts center. Composed by Arthur Sullivan and to a libretto by W. S. Gilbert, this opera tells the story of the crew of the 'Pinafore'. The opera opened with upbeat music. On the stage, plays with the sailors and Mrs. ButterCup continued. And sailor Ralph confesses in front of the crew that he is in love with Captain Corcoran's daughter Josephine. The same sailor, Dick Deadeye, gives Ralph realistic but heartbreaking advice. It is to think about the difference of status. But nothing could stop Ralph's burning heart. After arguing for his own suicide, Ralph finally succeeds in winning Josephine's love. Josephine and Ralph plan to run away together. But this time, Sir Joseph interrupts their love. Sir Joseph, who is about to marry Josephine, tries to convince her, but Josephine's heart is already on Ralph. Sir Joseph, who happened to hear of Josephine's plan, orders Ralph sent to prison, but the case reaches a climax when Little Buttercup appears. Little Buttercup reveals the shocking fact that, in fact, Captain Corcoran and Ralph were swapped when they were babies. With Little Buttercup's confession, Ralph and Corcoran swap clothes for each other, and their identities change. Ralph and Josephine, whose identities have changed, have a happy ending. Through this H.M.S Pinafore performance, I was able to think about opera in the 1800s. I think that people before TV spread, through this type of art, could feel joy and gain the strength to live. And opera, which became famous among people, was nurtured as an industry, and those involved in the opera industry would have been able to accumulate a lot of wealth. And the wealth flowed into the opera again, and the opera would have prospered even more.   (Denver = Wongeol Jeong) New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players가 Colorado Symphony Chrous와 만났다. 지난 21일, Denver performing arts center에 위치한 Boettcher Concert Hall에서 1878년 작곡된 오페라 'H.M.S Pinafore'가 공연됐다. Arthur Sullivan이 작곡하고 W. S. Gilbert의 대본으로 구성된 이 오페라는, 'Pinafore'호의 선원들에 대한 이야기다. 오페라는 경쾌한 음악으로 막을 올렸다. 무대 위에는 선원들과 ButterCup 부인과의 유희가 이어졌다. 그리고 선원 Ralph가 선장 Corcoran의 딸 Josephine을 사랑하고 있노라고 선원들 앞에서 고백한다. 같은 선원 Dick Deadeye는 Ralph에게 현실적인, 그러나 가슴 아픈 조언을 한다. 신분의 격차를 생각하라는 것이다. 그러나 그 어떤 것도, 불타는 Ralph의 마음을 막을 수는 없었다. 자살 소동까지 벌인 Ralph는 드디어 Josephine의 사랑을 얻는데 성공한다. Josephine과 Ralph는 함께 도망갈 계획을 세운다. 그러나 이번에는 Joseph 경이 둘의 사랑을 가로막는다. Josephine과 결혼하려고 하는 Joseph 경은, Josephine을 설득해보지만, Josephine의 마음은 이미 Ralph를 향해 있다. 우연히 Josephine의 계획을 듣게된 Joseph 경은, Ralph를 감옥으로 보내라고 명령하지만, 이때 Little Buttercup이 등장하면서, 사건은 절정에 이르게 된다. Little Buttercup은, 사실은, Corcoran 선장과 Ralph가 아기일 때, 서로 바뀌었다는 충격적인 사실을 털어놓는다. Little Buttercup의 고백으로, Ralph와 Corcoran은 서로의 옷을 바꿔입게 되고, 그리고 신분이 바뀌게 된다. 신분이 바뀐 Ralph와 Josephine은 행복한 결말을 맞이하게 된다. 이번 H.M.S Pinafore 공연을 통해서, 1800년대의 오페라에 대해서 생각해볼 수 있게 됐다. TV가 보급되기 이전의 사람들은, 이런 방식의 예술을 통해, 즐거움을 느끼고, 또 살아갈 힘을 얻을 수 있지 않았나 하는 생각이다. 그리고 사람들 사이에서 유명해지게 된 오페라는, 산업으로 육성이 되고, 오페라 산업 관련자들은 많은 부를 쌓을 수 있었을 것이다. 그리고 그 부가 다시금 오페라로 흘러들어가 오페라는 더욱 융성해졌을 것이다. 18세기의 드라마였을 오페라를, 현대에 재현할 수 있다는 것은, 이 시대를 살아가는 우리들에게, 큰 축복이다.

  (Denver = Wongeol Jeong) Daphnis et Chloe was composed in 1912 by Maurice Ravel for the Russian ballet Ballets Russes. Daphnis et Chloe is the story of a boy and a girl who have a secret at birth. One day, Lamon, a goat herder, finds baby Daphnis, and Dryas, a shepherd, finds baby Chloe and they both raise them. Daphnis and Chloe, who grew up together with their parents who took care of their livestock and raised them, fall in love before they know it. Daphnis and Chloe hear what love is from Philetas, an old shepherd who is a wise cowboy. Then one day, Daphnis learns of a deeper love relationship from Lycaenion, a woman from the city. But Daphnis doesn't try this with Chloe. For she did, in Lycaenion's words, 'as if she had committed murder, and would bleed profusely, and would scream and cry'. Meanwhile, Chloe is wooed by Dorocon and Lampis, but the two do not win Chloe's love and Dorocon dies. And, Chloe is also kidnapped by pirates who came to plunder her maidens, and Daphnis realizes her love for Chloe and despairs. Daphnis falls into a trap dug by pirates, and he escapes with the help of three nymphs. And Chloe is safely rescued from the pirates with the help of God Pan. When Daphnis and Chloe discover that they are brother and sister of the same parents, they leave the island and get married somewhere far away.

Daphnis는 해적들이 파놓은 함정에 빠지게 되고, 세 명의 님프에게 도움을 받아 빠져나온다. 그리고 Chloe는 판 신의 도움으로 무사히 해적에게서 구출된다. Daphnis와 Chloe는 자신들이 한 부모에게서 태어난 남매임을 알게 되고, 섬을 떠나 머나 먼 다른 곳에서 결혼하게 된다.

• [Culture] 'Nu-World' a new concept of modern dance

  (Arvada=Wongeol Jeong) A modern dance performance called 'Nu-World' was held at the Arvada Center. The stage opened with Christopher's dance. Christopher expressed human anguish, pain, and anger with his body. This performance mainly consisted of conversations with the performance creators, dancers and audience. On the stage that day, creator Bashir Muhammad had a conversation with the audience. Bashir shared his experience. It was the death of an acquaintance, or the experience of being sad or angry. It was about how all those experiences were expressed when choreographing. The performance at NU-World Contemporary Danse Theater was co-directed by Christopher Page-Sanders and Bashir Muhammad Page-Sanders.

Bashir는 자신의 경험을 이야기했다. 지인의 죽음이라든가, 슬펐거나 화가 났던 경험들이었다. 그러한 모든 경험들이 안무를 짤때 어떤 식으로 표현되는가에 대한 내용들이었다. 이번 NU-World Contemporary Danse Theatre 공연은, Christopher Page-Sanders와 Bashir Muhammad Page-Sanders가 공동 감독했다.

  DENVER—January 4, 2023—The Denver Art Museum (DAM) is proud to announce its lineup of local creatives, artists and collaborators for the 2023 season of Untitled events. Emerging in the new year with a new title “Artist Takeover,” the re-envisioned moniker clearly highlights collaborators’ roles in creating these exciting quarterly opportunities for a night of creative celebration. Untitled events connect the community with local creatives and offer immersive programming featuring performances, artmaking and one-of-a-kind experiences along with the opportunity for connecting and socializing. Each event is led by a duo of artists and selected collaborators, showcasing the artists’ perspectives and practices and providing a unique lens into the museum’s collections and exhibitions, activating the museum in participatory ways. At each Untitled, featured artists showcase their work while providing an unexpected and engaging atmosphere. Experiences are developed around current exhibitions and programming, and 2023 Untitled events will create a platform for Denver’s creative community to engage the public in celebrating the museum’s global collections and exhibitions on view. The Ponti restaurant and Café Gio at the DAM will both be open for visitors to dine during the special late-night hours of the quarterly Untitled events. We aim to create connections between creatives and visitors by highlighting artists’ voices in a social environment,” said Sarah Rockett, Manager of Creative and Public Engagement at the DAM. “Untitled is an opportunity to connect with creativity while enjoying entertainment, artmaking, and other participatory experiences.” The 2023 Untitled season kicks off January 27 with an eventful evening led by local creatives Melissa Ivey, whose work centers around music and advocacy for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Relatives (MMIR), and Sofie Birkin, illustrator and installation artist. Creative experiences across the campus will be part of the event, inspired by Her Brush: Japanese Women Artists from the Fong-Johnstone Collection. On view through May 13, 2023, Her Brush traces the pathways women artists forged for themselves in their pursuit of art during the 1600s to 1900s Japan and explores the universal human drive of artistic expression as self-realization for these artists who navigated cultural barriers during a time with strict gender roles for women. Exhibitions highlighted during the 2023 Untitled season include a diverse mix of ancient to contemporary presentation, such as Speaking with Light: Contemporary Indigenous Photography, Near East to Far West: Fictions of French and American Colonialism, From Chaos to Order: Greek Geometric Art from the Sol Rabin Collection and Islands Beyond Blue: Niki Hastings-McFall and Treasures from the Oceania Collection. • [Culture] Vivaldi 'The Four Seasons'

  (Devner = Wongeol Jeong) The vitality of spring, the hot vitality of summer, the lyricism of autumn, and the loneliness of winter... The Colorado Symphony performed Vivaldi's 'The Four Seasons'. This concert, held for three days on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from the 14th, was conducted under the direction of conductor Aram Demirjian, and violinist Paul Huang played the violin. The first movement, 'Spring', came to us with a rhythm and melody so familiar to us. The violin ensemble was as harmonious as the wind in the mountains and fields. A gentle breeze blew past my eyes. The melody of each violin was flowing in a single breeze. The scorching heat and passion of a summer day warmed my body. It was a moment when I realized once again that the passing times of passion were summer. The richness and ripeness of autumn were also melting in the melody. The wretchedness of winter and the cold birth that was giving birth to spring were also there. Vivaldi's 'The four seasons' was a special experience.
