  • [Culture] 'The meeting with Edward Elgar' Colorado Symphony
(Denver=Wongeol Jeong) Friday evening, the temperature was dropping. As usual, around the Denver Center for the Arts, the views after sunset were clear. Rarely, people walked, cars followed the signal, going and standing. Lights of light bulbs covered the street. I parked and was about to cross the street, and across the street a man who looked like conductor Christopher Dragon was hurriedly entering the restaurant. He had 30 minutes until the concert, so I thought, 'He's going to eat something.' The concert started with Rossini's 'William tell overture'. The soft melody soon ended with a strong march-style ensemble. The concerto for the Tubin's double bass that followed created a strange atmosphere. As unrealistic as the names of double bass and contrabass were moving my heart. In Elgar's 'Enigma Variation', a huge wall of sound was flowing along with the conductor dragon's gestures. Sound was flowing through the wall, sometimes like water, with different colors, thicknesses, and textures. And while concentrating on the flow of that sound, my mind calmed itself down. Although he is a composer who does not exist in the world now, it was nice to meet Elgar's music again in this way. Thank you. Edward Elgar. There, with your beloved wife Alice, may you rest in peace...

  • [Culture] An interview with ceramics artist Luanne Burke
An interview with ceramics artist Luanne Burke Story and photos by Leslie Simon Artist Luanne Burke has been a part of the Arvada Center Ceramics program for 23 years, and we spoke with her about what makes the Center a great creative home. As her vision has decreased over the years, she shared how her artwork has changed, and how Arvada Center staff are able to help her visions come to fruition. Arvada Center: How did you initially find yourself taking art classes at the Arvada Center? Luanne: I came here about 23 years ago, as I had just moved back to the Front Range and decided that I was going to do art. I found out about the Arvada Center since I was living just down the road in Wheat Ridge, so I signed up for my first class, and Bebe (Alexander) was my first instructor. AC: You and Bebe have a really long history together! Were there any other teachers or students who inspired you over the years? L: I’ve been in Megan’s classes a lot, and recently I’ve been taking classes with Bradley, which I’ve really enjoyed. He’s really good at verbalizing things to me so that I can learn quickly, which is so important now that my vision has gone. And the people who work here like Steve, they are just so helpful. AC: Have the Arvada Center teachers taught you anything specific that really elevated your art? L: I sell work outside of the Center, and the work that I make here is the work that sells. It’s really just at a noticeable, higher caliber. They help me in so many ways. When I glaze pieces, I can ask questions and make sure I got it all, as sometimes I miss a spot. They always have someone that can check it for me. AC: Can you share with us a little about your art background? L: I have a B.A. in Fine Art and my focus was painting and drawing. Actually, ceramics was my worst class! But I did some sculptural stuff at CSU on an independent study level after I graduated, and I kind of played with clay there. Then once I came here, I haven’t stopped. AC: If ceramics was your worst class initially, what changed? L: When I was looking to take a class here, I decided to go with clay because it was available, and I immediately had a blast with it. I was using it more like fabric, because I wasn’t using the wheel. I was hand-building, so I was using it more like fabric wrapping. I’ve always admired Bebe’s work (her work to me is exquisite!), and when she was doing architectural stuff I said to her “I can’t do that.” She said “Don’t worry about it. Work the way you work. You work well organically, that’s who you are, so go for it.” And that is THE best thing anyone has ever said to me, it just freed me up to try the things I am natural at. AC: When you start a piece, do you have an idea of what you want to do? L: Typically I do. I get ideas, I have dreams, I have dreamed about a lot of artwork. When you are in that waking state between wake and sleep. That’s when I get a lot of ideas. I can’t sketch my work anymore, so I just put it in my dictated notes recorder. I say all the details and describe the vision, and in terms of color I can get myself into a really meditative state. That’s never been an issue for me. I would come up with color schemes here and other students would say “I want to do what she’s doing!” It’s kind of funny because I can’t see the color, but I knew what I wanted based on what I would see in my mind. AC: How has your art progressed and changed over the years? L: I’ve worked here as well as at other studios. There was a time I was doing figurative work, some of it was really organic, I did a lot of raku, then I was doing some really beautiful faces and hands, and figures that were quite large, I did that down in Denver. They were more realistic, and I don’t know that my work is like that anymore. I am going to try to do that again, but I don’t really know what the outcome is since I can’t see it. In that sense it has changed, I will talk to Bebe and say “I don’t know if I can do that.” But I’m doing these more abstract ideas where I draw into the clay. And she is so encouraging and says she really likes it, so that encourages me to keep going. Whatever comes naturally! My work is a little different than when I started because back then I could see somewhat - not perfectly, but somewhat- and now I can’t see anything. So it is a different experience. But yet there is still the internal inspiration. AC: How has being a natural born artist impacted the rest of your life? L: I’ve always done art, I definitely feel like I was born an artist. It’s who I am, it’s what my brain is like. But I also do a lot of athletics. So I have these two sides, and it requires different use of my brain. But even with athletics you get into an open state, and that’s when I really excel. AC: What kind of athletics are you into? L: I used to ski, I ski-raced. Then I got into running, I started running when I was 14. I was also a swimmer, I’ve never been that good as a swimmer, but I’m glad I did because now I know how to swim! AC: Anything that can get you into that flow state! Do you have any advice to give to art students about finding their talent? L: One of the things about being here at the Arvada Center is that there is a plethora of resources and things to try. If somebody has tried something and it turned out really great, you get to learn what they have done. I love how we share different things. Be open, learn from whoever - you can learn something from everybody. There is always something to learn from everybody, regardless of the teacher that you take. AC: Is there anything else you would like to add? L: I just want to reiterate how great the Arvada Center has been to me. They are really open and supportive, they have never been condescending in any way. They’ve always known what I’m capable of, and they treat me like everyone else. And that’s been a godsend, it really has.

  • Colossal New Works by Carol Bove, Now on View on The Met Facade
American artist Carol Bove (born 1971) has created four sculptures for The Met Fifth Avenue's facade niches. The Facade Commission: Carol Bove, The séances aren't helping is the second commission to be featured on the Museum's facade and will be on view through fall 2021. Made of sandblasted, contorted stainless-steel tubes and five-foot-wide reflective aluminum disks, the sculptures appear astoundingly lithe and supple, almost mercurial, despite their weight and heft-an effect Bove achieves by pushing her materials to their physical limits using incredible force. Projecting outward from the niches, the works confound perception. The exhibition is made possible by the Director's Fund, the Diane W. and James E. Burke Fund, Helene and Johannes Huth, and Cynthia Hazen Polsky and Leon B. Polsky. Additional support is provided by the John & Amy Griffin Foundation, Inc. and the Speyer Family Foundation. Max Hollein, the Marina Kellen French Director of The Met, said, "Carol Bove has transformed The Met's historic exterior with four commanding yet playful sculptures. These colossal figures and abstract entities engage powerfully with their surroundings, beckoning to visitors and reflecting the changing light throughout the day. We look forward to sharing these works with New York." Sheena Wagstaff, Leonard A. Lauder Chairman of Modern and Contemporary Art, added, "The Met's Beaux-Art architecture is 119 years old but—like the niches that were left empty—the Museum itself is an ongoing, unfinished project, always changing. Old certainties wither in this new era: Bove's sculptures speak directly to this, upending tradition but upholding the power of culture to question. They are dynamic provocateurs." Bove works improvisationally and sculpts at scale and in the round, without preparatory drawings. For this commission, she used a one-to-one mock-up of the Museum's empty niches that was created in her studio. Bove chose a series of nonrepresentational forms that resonate with modernist styles such as Art Deco and abstraction-a stark contrast to the traditional figurative sculptures that the architect Richard Morris Hunt envisioned for The Met's facade, which was completed in 1902, but was never fully realized. Bove based the size of the aluminum disks on the diameter of the columns that flank the Museum's niches and the medallion portraits that adorn the spandrels of the arches. The differing orientations result in a playful, rhythmic pattern, yielding a frisson of delight that might throw viewers slightly off-balance. By astutely engaging the Museum's facade, reimagining its history, and retooling some of its architectural and design elements, the artist subtly calls for us to reevaluate and reckon with the legacies of tradition. Originally scheduled to go on view in September 2020, the commission was delayed due to the pandemic. The Facade Commission is part of a new series of contemporary commissions at The Met in which the Museum invites artists to create new works of art, establishing a dialogue between the artist's practice, The Met collection, the physical Museum, and The Met's audiences. The Facade Commission was inaugurated in September 2019 with Wangechi Mutu's The NewOnes, will free Us (September 9, 2019–November 1, 2020). The Facade Commission: Carol Bove, The séances aren't helping was conceived by the artist in consultation with Sheena Wagstaff, Leonard A. Lauder Chairman of Modern and Contemporary Art, and the project curator, Shanay Jhaveri, Assistant Curator of International Modern and Contemporary Art, both of The Met's Department of Modern and Contemporary Art.

  • Colorado Symphony, Christopher Dragon Accepts Contract Extension Through 2023-24 Concert Season
Denver, CO – The Colorado Symphony announces a contract extension for Resident Conductor Christopher Dragon through the 2023-24 concert season, ending June 30, 2024. Dragon, who previously served as Associate Conductor for four seasons starting in 2015-16, was named Resident Conductor and given a two-year contract prior to the 2019-20 season. This renewal and extension of contract begins July 1, 2021. “It’s an absolute honor to have this opportunity to remain part of a world-class orchestra like the Colorado Symphony,” said Dragon. “I look forward to working with the tremendous musicians and staff of the organization moving forward as we look to come back stronger than ever once we are able to resume pre-COVID-19-restricted concert operations in Boettcher Concert Hall.” Dragon is currently in his sixth season with the Colorado Symphony and his second as the Resident Conductor. During the summer of 2020, Dragon conducted 18 live, socially distanced performances at Red Rocks Amphitheatre as part of the Colorado Symphony’s Acoustic on the Rocks series. These concerts were the first live events at Red Rocks with patrons since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. In so doing, Dragon became the conductor with the most podium appearances in the illustrious history of Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Dragon is also in his second season as Music Director for the Wyoming Symphony Orchestra located in Casper, WY. He previously held the position of Assistant Conductor with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra for three years, which gave him the opportunity to work closely with Principal Conductor Asher Fisch. Dragon works regularly in Australia and has guest conducted the Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and West Australian Symphony Orchestras. His 2015 debut performance at the Sydney Opera House with Josh Pyke and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra was released on album by ABC Music and won an ARIA the following year. “Christopher Dragon has been an indispensable asset and audience favorite since coming on board as associate conductor six seasons ago and we’re thrilled that he'll be a mainstay on our podium for the next four seasons as he continues his role as Resident Conductor,” said Anthony Pierce, Chief Artistic Officer. “Since being named Resident Conductor two seasons ago, it’s been a pleasure to watch him blossom and mature while taking on additional leadership within our organization. We look forward to seeing growth between him and the ensemble for years to come.” Dragon’s international guest conducting includes the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Orquestra Sinfônica de Porto Alegre, the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. He has also conducted at numerous festivals including the Breckenridge and Bangalow Music Festivals, with both resulting in immediate re-invitations. At the beginning of 2016 Dragon conducted Wynton Marsalis’ Swing Symphony as part of the Perth International Arts Festival alongside Wynton Marsalis and Jazz at the Lincoln Center Orchestra. Dragon began his conducting studies in 2011 and was a member of the prestigious Symphony Services International Conductor Development Program in Australia under the guidance of course director Christopher Seaman. He has also studied with numerous distinguished conductors including Leonid Grin, Paavo and Neeme Järvi at the Järvi Summer Festival, Fabio Luisi at the Pacific Music Festival, and conducting pedagogue Jorma Panula.
