  (Denver = Wongeol Jeong) ‘운명은 이처럼 문을 두드린다.’ Symphony 5번을 작곡하고 베토벤이 한 말이다. 당시 베토벤은 30대 중반이었다. 그의 귀는 점점 나빠졌다. 그리고 프랑스의 나폴레온이 빈을 점령했다. 흔히 말하는 난세였다. 총 4악장으로 구성된 Symphony No.5 '운명‘은 빠르고 격정적인, 그리고 힘있는 음색으로 이어진다. 결코 평범하지 않은 운명인 것이다. 이미 너무나도 익숙한 멜로디지만, 듣는 이로 하여금 빠져들게 하는 마력을 가지고 있음이 분명하다. 1악장은 호른의 독주에 이어 바이올린, 클라리넷, 플롯이 이어진다. 너무도 유명한 멜로디다. 운명의 비장함에 몸이 떨려올 정도다. 얼마나 비정한 운명이기에, 이토록 비장하단 말인가... 이어지는 부드러운 선율은, 삶의 역경 뒤에 이어지는 일종의 ‘기쁨’ 같은 것을 표현한다. 그러나 그것도 잠시뿐이다. 운명은 인간을 가만히 놔두지 않는 것이다. 교향곡 ‘운명’은 비장함과 부드러움을 넘나들면서 사람의 ‘인생’을 표현하고 있었다. 때로는 비정하게, 때로는 부드럽게... 이것이 당시 삼십대 중반의 베토벤이 느끼는 인생 이었나보다. 비록 귀는 점점 들리지 않았지만, 그의 음악에 대한 열정은 불타올랐다. 그리고 그것이 훌륭한 작품을 탄생시키는 원동력이 됐다. 베토벤의 Symphony No.5가 이토록 다채로울 수 있었던 이유는, 그의 운명이 다채로웠던 까닭일 것이다. 역경은 예술을 풍요롭게 하는 원동력이 되기도 하는 것이다.

• [Event] Las Vegas show 'Riverdance', coming to Denver!

  (Denver = Wongeol Jeong) It was a somewhat tired Wednesday afternoon. I couldn't tell if the weather was continuously alternating between cloudy and clear. For several weeks, it had been raining intermittently, followed by periods of clear skies. Fortunately, when I arrived at the Buell Theatre, the weather was reasonably clear. It was a moderate day, not too cold nor too hot. I quickened my pace in the "moderate" air. The stage was set with Irish-themed music. Three musicians were playing different instruments. The saxophone, violin, and uilleann pipes harmonized, creating an Irish ambiance. This performance featured the traditional Irish tap dance. The group tap dance with added dynamism brought liveliness to the theater. As befitting traditional Irish dances, the addition of traditional music created a serene atmosphere. The stage began with a dozen or so young men and women dancing the tap dance together. The tap dance was infused with strength and dynamism, making it exhilarating. The stage then transitioned into a passionate dance performed by a dancer in a Spanish-style red dress. The stage, reminiscent of fire, evoked the words "seductive temptation." Eventually, the stage transformed into contemporary dance. The harmonious collaboration of the saxophone and the dance brought joy to the ears. While watching Riverdance, the creativity that brought fun, laughter, and engaged the audience through applause was refreshing. The beautiful voices of the singers, captivating lighting in vibrant colors, and costumes that evoked a sense of magic added another layer of enjoyment to the performance. The Riverdance 25th anniversary show, which ran until the 4th at the Denver Buell Theatre, is planned to be performed at the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin, Ireland, starting from the 15th.

  (Denver = Wongeol Jeong) 조금은 피곤한 수요일 오후였다. 계속해서 날씨가 흐렸다 맑았다를 반복해서인지도 모르겠다고 생각했다. 몇 주째, 간헐적으로 비가 내리다가 맑아지기를 반복하고 있었다. 다행히 Buell Theatre에 도착했을 때는 적당히 맑은 날씨였다. 춥지도, 그렇다고 덥지도 않은, 적당한 날이었다. 나는, ‘적당한’ 공기 속에서 걸음을 재촉했다. 무대는 아일랜드 풍의 음악과 함께 막을 올렸다. 세 명의 악사가 각기 다른 악기를 연주하고 있었다. 섹소폰과 바이올린, 그리고 uilleann pipes가 하모니를 이루며, 아일랜드 풍의 분위기를 자아내고 있었다. 이번 Performance는 Ireland 고유의 텝댄스였다. 여러 명이 추는 스텝 댄스에 역동성이 더해져, 극장을 활기차게 만들고 있었다. Ireland의 전통 춤인 만큼, 전통 음악이 더해져, 고즈넉한 느낌마저 들게 하고 있었다. 무대는 젊은 남녀 십여 명이 함께 텝댄스를 추면서 시작했다. 텝댄스에 힘과 역동성이 더해져 흥겨움이 느껴졌다. 무대는 스페인 풍의 무희가 붉은 드레스를 입고 추는 열정적인 춤으로 바뀌었다. 마치 불을 연상시키는 무대는, ‘고혹적인 유혹’이라는 단어를 떠오르게 만들었다. 무대는 이윽고 현대무용으로 바뀌었다. Saxophone과 조화를 이루는 합주가 귀를 즐겁게 하고 있었다. Riverdance를 보는 동안, 재미와 웃음, 그리고 관중으로 하여금 박수로 공연에 참여하게끔 하는 참신함이 새로웠다. 또 아름다운 목소리의 가수와 아름다운 색상의 조명, 그리고 마법을 연상하게 하는 의상 또한 공연을 보는 또 다른 재미를 선사하고 있었다. Denver Buell Theatre에서 지난 4일까지 공연한 Riverdance 25th anniversary show는 오는 15일 Dublin, Ireland에 위치한 Gaiety Theatre에서 공연될 계획이다.

  (Denver = Wongeol Jeong) Opera Colorado performed Puccini's Turandot. On the 6th, 9th, 12th, and 14th of last month, the performance took place at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House, located in the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. This production, created by Puccini, is acclaimed as his ultimate and finest opera. In particular, during the highlight of this opera, the Nessun Dorma segment, the entire audience held their breath and immersed themselves in the performance. For this production, conductor ARI PELTO took charge of the baton, while SAHAR NOURI served as the Chorus Master and Assistant Conductor. Additionally, ARIA UMEZAWA assumed the role of Director and successfully led the opera Turandot. Kara Shay Thomson portrayed the role of Princess Turandot, and Jonathan Burton played the role of Calàf, delivering outstanding performances in this production. Furthermore, Bass Young Bok Kim, who made his debut as Colline (La bohème) at the New York City Opera, added another brilliant touch to the stage by taking on the role of Timur.

On the 19th, the opening performance of 'Miss Rhythm,' portraying the life of Ruth Brown, known as the queen of R&B, took place at the Garner Galleria Theatre in the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. On that day, singer Sheryl McCallum performed the songs. Sheryl sang around 10 of Ruth Brown's classic songs without a break. Her vocal range and clarity were undeniable, and her ability to capture the essence of soul unique to R&B never wavered, garnering applause after each song. The Colorado Symphony held a performance of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker. From the 12th to the 14th, over three days, this performance took place at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, under the baton of conductor Andrew Litton. The Colorado Symphony captivated the audience by performing well-known pieces like the Waltz of the Flowers during this concert. In particular, the Pas De Deux showcased two ballet dancers gracefully crossing the air, accompanied by the beautiful melodies of the harp. As time flowed on, the venue transformed into a ballroom, and numerous melodies turned each person into a ballet dancer, flowing and dancing among the audience. And within their hearts, they became the twilight backdrop to the dancing melodies. Amidst the early Christmas celebrants, the white snow of music gently fell.

Colorado Symphony가 Tchaikovsky의 Nutcracker 연주회를 가졌다. 지난 12일 부터 14일 까지, 3일에 걸쳐 Denver Center for the Performing Arts에서 열린 이번 연주회는 지휘자, Andrew Litton의 지휘 아래 막을 올렸다.
